Castles of the XVth century

Better known as Bishops Castle, was originally probably an early Romanesque Tower with a constructive dwelling and city wall. First authentically mentioned as a dairy farmers’ dwelling in the year 1254. About 1415 burnt down together with the town hall. Subsequently rebuilt and extended particularly under Bishop Supersaxo, who in 1475 renovated the tower and converted it into a Bishops’ summer residence. In the year 1627 a sensational process took place in the Bishops Castle against the knight Anton Stockalper, who was tortured, hung drawn and quartered in front of the castle. In the 17th century the Bishops Castle was the scene of witches trials.

CASTLE LEUK

At first sight, Castle Levan, overlooking the banks of the river Clyde, appears to be a romantic 16th century tower-house built on a typical Scottish L-plan; however, all is not how it seems, the present structure of Castle Levan started as a massive 14th century tower that was later extended in the 15th century by abutting an additional tower.

Cawdor Castle is famous for its associations with Shakespeare's MacBeth. The Thanedom of Cawdor was promised to MacBeth by the witches, and people like to imagine that the castle was the setting for the murder of Duncan. However, none of the castle dates from MacBeth's time in the middle of the 11'th century. In 1454 King James II permitted the Thane of Cawdor to erect and fortify his castle.

The medieval city of Amboise is home to a grand chateau that flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and was lived in by five kings in all, including leading figures such as Charles VIII, Francois I, and Catherine de Medicis, to name a few. Perched on the river’s edge, the Chateau d’Amboise is the crown jewel of the town, a display of royal extravagance inside and out.

Built in the XVth century, the chateau was considerably altered in the XVIIth by the addition of the arcades which support the balcony embellishing the facade. A double staircase was also built, leading down to the formal French gardens. A harmonious series of balustrated terraces, providing a magnificent perspective, descend gracefully to a staircase and ornamental lake.
Inside the chateau is a room containing paintings on wood dating from 1662, a Louis XIII room with painted beams, a kitchen typical of the local style. In the Keep, a museum of prehistoric objects and in the park some curious prehistoric grottoes.

Interesting and well preserved, Dean Castle consists of a 14th-century keep and a 15th-century palace block within a courtyard, all enclosed by a curtain wall. The lands were given to the Boyds by Robert the Bruce, and a castle here is said to have been besieged by the English during the Wars of Independence. The castle now houses a museum, containing a collection of armour and musical instruments, and is surrounded by a public park.

Located at Delgatie, near Turriff in Aberdeenshire, Delgatie Castle is thought to date from 1030, although the present castle is more likely a 16th century building (c.1570). A Buchan property in the mid 14th century and subsequently granted to the Hays, it has undergone many changes in ownership but now has returned to Hay ownership, and under the supervision of Captain John Hay it underwent major restoration. The castle has displays of stonemasonry and heraldry as well as a collection of portraits and antiques.

This impressive and daunting fortress consists of a 13th-century curtain wall enclosing a courtyard. There is a massive 15th-century keep and later ranges of building within the court. Duart was a MacLean property until 1674, when it was acquired by the Campbell Earl of Argyll. Although it was garrisoned, it was not used as a residence and was abandoned after the Jacobite Rising of 1745, to become derelict and roofless. In 1911, it was acquired by Fitzroy MacLean who restored the castle. It is now the home of the MacLean clan chiefs.

Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the castle in 1562, and Hugh, the 16th laird, entertained Bonnie Prince Charlie here in 1746, then the Duke of Cumberland two days later. Robert Burns visited in 1787.
